Abbie George Maggio ’18
Abbie George Maggio was focused on a life of service even before she arrived at University of Mobile – but her time at UM would prepare her for ministry as an accomplished singer, songwriter and worship leader.
The 2018 Annie Boyd Parker Weaver Excellence Award winner, Maggio grew up in a family of ministry in Louisiana.
“From a very young age, I loved the church, loved ministry and loved being a child of God,” Maggio said. So much so that in 2009, the summer before her freshman year of high school, she surrendered to full-time ministry.
“I knew God was calling me to leverage my entire life and all of my skills and abilities to ministry,” she said. “I believe God was clear in that moment and gave me insight.”
University of Mobile was always on her radar for college, and an audition for the music department during her junior year of high school sealed her fate as a student.
“I knew I was on the edge of something, but little did I know I was walking into a room filled with people who would impact my ministry not just at UM, but also for a lifetime,” she said.
“I walked into the audition and everything changed – I was in a room full of people who would literally change my life. On stage were the guys I would end up traveling with, not just with Impact, but beyond. They became my best friends.”
When Maggio founded Lion Chapel, a traveling worship ministry, they became her ministry partners.
Her involvement at the university included Impact, University Ministries,
True Spin and Chapel, but it also included recording songs with the university’s 8Eighty Records while earning acclaim as a songwriter. Her original song, “Rising on the Wind,” was chosen by one of the leading publishers of Christian church music as the title track of the 2018 Prism Music choir book.
All of her experiences prepared her for her current position as worship leader at Redemption Church.
“I came to UM and got to step into my calling,” she said.
